European project EUTROMED starts using the platform Orcelis Fitocontrol

This project, lead by the provincial institution, includes the participation of University of Granada, Bonterra Ibérica SL and Paisajes del Sur SL as beneficiaries and of the Department of the Environment of the Regional Government of Andalusia as co-financier.

The aim of LIFE + EUTROMED project is developed a sustainable method for the reduction of nitrogen level in surface contaminated water of agricultural areas from the Mediterranean climate area.

The Main objectives are:

  1. To promote the installation of a sustainable method that combines the use of a technology based on the nitrate retention (through vegetable filtres) in agricultural fields, with complementary measures oriented towards farmers and farm owners training and sensitization, for a correct use of fertilization and irrigation systems.
  2. To show the effectiveness of differents fielters (made of vegetable fibers) and the good relation cost-effectiveness of the methods applied. This result will be expressed depending on its capacity to hold the nitrogene from the runoff water that passes through biofilters, and depending on its capacity to reduce the erosion.
  3. Make easier the transference of the results obtained, by editing a practical guide, that offers standard and lowcost solutions about the installation of these filters by the farmers, and through the integration into networks that move the experience to other mediterranean zones with the same problem.
  4. Implicate farmers and farm owners in the preservation and the well use of natural and landscape resources through development of voluntary mechanisms of collaboration, process known as Territorial Custody.
